  17. <p>     What fan of pay-per-view television duels could resist such
  18. an event? In this corner, the operatic heavyweight from Modena,
  19. Italy, Luciano Pavarotti! And in this corner, that Iberian
  20. emoter, champeen tenor Placido Domingo! The kings of the high
  21. Cs will head a list of stars on Sept. 23, when a 25th-
  22. anniversary gala at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City is
  23. broadcast in a way usually associated with professional
  24. punch-'em-ups: live pay-per-view television.

  26. <p>     The price tag for the home viewer will be as elevated as
  27. the entertainment--a glass-shattering $34.95. Presenters
  28. Cablevision, NBC Cable and Polygram are obviously hoping that
  29. the success of pay-per-view pugilism will be duplicated among
  30. opera lovers. The gala is described as "the first in a long-term
  31. agreement" with the Met, which currently presents free PBS opera
  32. broadcasts.
